Acquiring location information for using electric wheelchairs inside buildings

Depending on the physical power of manual wheel chair users, some places can be inaccessible. For that reason, many wheelchair users do not move independently. We have sought to develop a data collection system for use in navigation by manual wheelchair users. The system can measure the required force to move the manual wheelchair, the width of the space of an aisle in which it is possible to turn around completely, and position information. Nevertheless, an important problem remains: acquisition of location information within a building. As described herein, we report a system that was developed to obtain the location information of an electric wheelchair for a data collection system for building interiors. The location information in the building is obtained by reading QR codes by the camera which mounted the wheelchair. The QR code includes the building numbers, floor numbers, and the QR code number. The QR code numbers show locations of the QR code in the buildings. In this report, we report that using this system is possible to obtain location information within a building at a high rate.
