Analysis of Built-up Area Expansion and Rural Land Loss for a Fast Developing Region

Land use and land cove are influenced mainly by human beings in the short history period. Built-up area expansion especially the urban sprawl has been inducing the land surface changed in the whole of the world since last century. Pearl River Delta Estuary in south of china has experienced the rapid economic boom since the implement of Open Door Policy in 1979. Four sets of Landsat image (TM/ETM+) acquired respectively in 1990, 1995, 2000 and 2008 were used to obtain the land use types through the object-based classification method. The build area expanded dramatically with the flow of migration from all parts of China while the rural land degraded obviously. During 1990-2008, the built-up area increased from 605.50 km2 in 1990 to 2394.25 km2 in 2008, meanwhile the rural land, including farm land, fishery, forest and shrub, decreased. The built-up area in East Pearl River Estuary (Dongguan and Shenzhen) expanded 1337.12 km2 from 1990 to 2008 while the expansion in West Pearl River Delta Estuary (Zhongshan and Panyu) was only 548.96 km2. Influenced by the land use policy, the built-up area expansion in 1995-2000 was only 145.17 km2 while the expansion in 2000-2008 was 891.07 km2.
