A new Non-destructive Technology Application of Ground Penetrating Radar—A Case Test of Detection of Underground Water Pipe Leak in Campus
In order to identify underground water pipe leak using ground penetrating radar non-destructively, a fast and effective method was presented, the method includes the background removal and horizontalvertical band-pass filter of the radargrams, and the leakage points can be identified by analyzing hyperbolic reflection wave of the processed radargrams in the case of no excavation or any damage to the underground water pipes. The test site is in China West Normal University, the pipe is located about 1m beneath the surface, the length is 21m, the ground of the area is covered with concrete and stone asphalt The profile measuring is conducted perpendicularly to the pipe every 1m from the edge of west cover of cellar well, the length of each measuring profile is 2.5m, the presence of pipeline can be detected at about 1m of each profile. The result shows that: the leak point position of about 13m from the west cellar cover can be detected by the processing of background removal and filtering, this outcome of the detected leakage point using this method is consistent with that of excavation. That means this method can identify the underground water pipe leak rapidly and effectively. Because it is simple and cost much less than the traditional ones, the method has great practical significance in citys production and living.
