Development of Optical Instrument as Turbidimeter: Replicating the Standards
Optical method is the typical measuring technique that has been applied intensively for the measurement of water turbidity. Comprehensive guideline for the development of turbidimeter has been stated by United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) and has been used as standards by instruments manufacturer world wide. The development commonly does not only establish through physical instrumentation aspects, but also emphasizes on the physics of light absorption and scattering that is embedded within the science of turbidity. This paper presents work conducted in the development of turbidimeter by replicating the existing standard design guideline. The design is the assembly of photodiode, amplifier board, 12-bit ADC and Basic Stamp 2pe microcontroller motherboard. The measurement produces coefficient of determination, R2 =09886 with RMSE (root mean square error) of 2.927547 NTU.
