Patenting vs. Publication: Innovation in Chinese Leading Universities
The emerging trend of university patenting and the potential conflict between technological commercialization and scientific publications have raised more concerns. Taking Chinese 985 project universities as example , we examine the possible determinants of university patenting and the link to publications in China. We confirmed the effects of industry R&D funds on university patenting, although these effects are not significant in long run. We also found that university patents are more reactive to financial capital at university level while university publications are more responsive to the human capital. The result showed that the determinants of university patents and publications are different but compatible. Limitations and implications for future research are discussed.
