Top Academia: Development of a System for Evaluation of Staff, Departments and Colleges in King Saud University
We describe and discuss the development of a comprehensive system of staff, department and college research evaluation. The system measures the number of articles in ISI-indexed publications, the number of citations of papers published in the previous two years the number of Ph.D students, grants, peer reviewed innovative research projects and research facilities among others. It is based on a web based data collection platform, called Top Academia, which is dynamically linked to the Web of Science database to ensure full coverage of the university publications in 2009 and is also used to collect and build a comprehensive databank of various academic activities such as patents, books, awards and so on. The Web platform performance and security implementation were very satisfactory. The data entry has been completed with 37% of the eligible university staff entering their own data. Data for other staff were entered by the Top Academia team using university records and data from the Web of Science. Sufficient data has now been collected to carry out a university-wide evaluation exercise. Results were presented outlining active colleges and departments and groups within these colleges and departments.
