Evaluation and Comparison of Universities in China Mainland and Taiwan
Publication performance has been generally applied to basic research output evaluation for universities. We draw on the publication statistical data of Essential Science Indicators (ESI) database during the time period of 1998 -2008, and compare the top universities research outputs in China Mainland with those in Taiwan, especially the top 10% ESI-listed universities. The analysis shows that the universities in these two regions have an unbalanced distribution either in quantity or quality. NTU takes the lead among the two regions, but Chinese Mainland universities have a relatively better academic performance than those in Taiwan on a whole if taking no account of the total mass.
