Computational Approach to Alter Enzyme Specificity: Case Study of D-Glucuronate Dehydrogenase from Chromohalobacter salexigens
Introduction Uronic acids are very abundant in nature and are main component of pectins (D-galacturonic acid) and seaweed polymers (D-glucuronic acid in ulvan, Dmannuronic acid and L-guluronic acid in alginate). However, their industrial use has been limited to food industries. Uronic acids can be utilized as a starting material for the production of bulk chemicals, if the ways to use them are properly developed. For example, D-glucuronic acid (GluUA) can be converted to D-glucaric acid which has been identified as one of the top-value added, biomassderived chemicals by the US Department of Energy.
