Separation of Blood on a Chip Utilizing Spiral Micorchannel with Fence and Cofferdam as Filtration Structures
Microfluidics can be utilized to manipulate cells and to separate the plasma from blood samples. Based on the crossflow and the centrifugation effect, a novel chip utilizing spiral microchannel with fence and cofferdam as filtration structures was fabricated by the micromachining technology. A cofferdam and a pillared fence along with the spiral microchannel was used to separate blood cells from the plasma, while white blood cells (WBCs) and red blood cells (RBCs) could also be segregated at the same time. Clogging and jamming in this filtration structure are efficiently alleviated in this device. The presented separation chip for cells and plasma isolation could be integrated into uTAS for point-of-care diagnostics in the near future.
