Chitin-based materials prepared via dissolution in NaOH/urea aqueous solution at low temperature
Chitin dissolution is very difficult in most common solvents. In the present work, chitin was dissolved in NaOH/urea aqueous solution via the freezing/thawing method. The results from 13C NMR and light scattering (LS) strongly demonstrated that the native chitin could be dissolved completely in this aqueous solvent system at low temperature to form transparent solutions without derivatization. From the chitin solution, novel chitin materials were prepared successfully, showing good mechanical properties, bioactivity and excellent adsorption on heavy metal ions.
