Exploring KDD and Datamining

The automation of many business, scientific and government transaction and management, the vast advancement in data collection tools has contributed in hastily increasing the data generating and collecting capabilities. The extensive use of WWW has swamped us with enormous amount of data and information. For any organization the voluminous historic data is of utmost importance but the confrontation is how to extract the useful hidden data which is of concern to the organization. Datamining or prevalently called KDD deals with expedient extraction of patterns signifying knowledge or extracting remarkable information. This paper presents a concise overview of the available literature on KDD and on what is data mining. The position and importance of datamining is highlighted. Further we discuss the basic principles of some commonly used data mining techniques. We also discuss some application of data mining.
