Energy and Cost Saving Potential of Crucible Selection for Aluminium Foundries

1 Introduction Crucibles have been used for many years in the nonferrous foundry industry. Historically, the principal measure of crucible performance has been lifetime with the majority of recent technology developments being focussed on improvements in both formulations and production processes in order to maximise life. The thermal properties of a crucible have tended to be less emphasised and generally restricted to crucibles used in melting furnaces where melt rate is an important performance parameter. However, with the everincreasing cost of energy, the thermal performance of a crucible is becoming more and more important. Generally foundries do not routinely monitor the energy consumed by individual crucible furnaces but energy costs are such that the cost of energy over the lifetime of a crucible can be significantly higher than the cost of the crucible itself.
