Real-Time Observation of Porosity Formation during Directional Solidification in Al-7Si-0.3Mg Casting Alloy

Using micro-focus radiography and unidirectional solidification technology, the evolution process of porosities was observed in-situ during solidification of Al-7Si-o. 3Mg alloy. Irregular porosities could not be regarded as shrinkage driven since they are gas porosities at the early stage of formation process. Phenomena such as floating of porosities were observed, expecting they would impact the final porosity percentage in castings. Based on the real-time observation results, activating mechanism was deduced to explAln the nucleation of porosities.
