The Castability of 600C High Temperature Titanium Alloys

600℃ high temperature titanium alloys are near-alpha alloys working at 600℃ in aerospace industry, are usually processed by the route of forging. However, investment casting offers another manufacturing method with economical and net-shape characteristics. It is necessary to investigate the castability of 600 ℃ high temperature titanium alloys, especially the mold filling capacity. In this paper, a wax mesh pattern was applied to the castability test, and the castability index was evaluated by the percentage of the filled wax pattern segments. The results showed that IMI834 has similar filling capacity compared to other 600℃ high temperature titanium alloys, such as Ti -1100, BT36 and Ti6oo, while the IMI834 alloy has inferior castability compared to the Ti-6Al-4V alloy. The influence of the mold preheat temperature was also evaluated. In this study, there is no significant difference for mold temperature between 300℃ and 500 ℃, but the temperature of 800℃ presented better castability. A flat and thin-section component of IMI834 was successfully prepared by investment casting.
