Strength and Abrasion Characteristics of Alloy Tool Steel Castings Produced by Investment Casting Process

This study Alms to research and develop application of alloy tool steel(SKD11 of JIS G4404) castings with high C(carbon) and high Cr(chromium) ,manufactured by the investment casting process. We systematically investigate on influence of amount,morphology and distribution of M7C3 and/or MC type carbides on mechanical properties such as tensile and bending strength, hardness and abrasion resistance. The steel castings melted by a high frequency induction furnace and cast the melts with varying from 0. 3 mass% V (vanadium) to 10 mass% V. With increasing V content, crystallized carbides in the casting were found to increase and change from plate-like eutectic M7C3 type to granular MC type, crystallizing randomly owing to stronger stabilization of the carbide of V than Cr. Tensile, bending strength and hardness of quenched and subsequent tempered castings with 0.3 mass% V exhibit about 1 000 MPa,1 750 MPa and 62 HRC, respectively. By an addition of 5 mass% in V content, both strengths increase to 1200 MPa and 1 800 MPa However, the strength tends to decrease with increasing up to 10 mass% V. The hardness of castings with 10 mass% V is lower than that with less than 5 mass% V.The castings with 1. 8 mass% C and 5 mass% V, and with 2. 8 mass% C and 10 mass% V modified by increasing the C content according to amount of V added is found to exhibit same or higher strength and hardness than those with the SKD11 composition.The abrasion weight loss of castings with the matrix to mAlntAln good hardening ability is found to decrease with increasing V content. Consequently,we conclude that abrasion characteristics of the castings can improve with the addition of V.
