Microstructure and Properties of Mg-Based Quasicystal Particulate Reinforced Composite

The Mg-based quasicystal particle reinforced composite was prepared by conventional casting method in this paper. The matrix alloy was Mg-8Gd-3Y magnesium alloy and the reinforced-phase was Mg3Zn6Y quasicystal particles. SEM,TEM,XRD and tensile test at room temperatures were used to study the microstructures and properties of Mg-based quasicystal particulate reinforced composite. The analysis shows that the thick dendrite grAln in matrix alloy gradually changed into fine equiaxed grAlns with increase of the amount of quasicystal alloy added. Meanwhile network - shaped eutectic compound Mg24 (Y , Gd, Zn) 5 was formed and quasicrystal icosahedral phase with high stiffness and high stability was diffusively distributed in grAln boundary. The tensile strength, yield strength and elongation at room temperature of composite was also improved.
