Development of Modeling System for Structural Analysis of Casting with Shrinkage Cavities

This paper presents a modeling system for structural analysis of casting with internal shrinkage cavities. Firstly, STL format models of both the casting and internal shrinkage cavities were obtAlned with industrial Computed Tomography(CT) X-ray system and lmaqeware, and secondly, a python-based code was utilized to analyze shrinkage cavity shapes and then simplify them to minimal volume ellipsoids which enclose all points of shrinkage cavities. The code was developed and implemented into ABAQUS. as a customized plug-in toolkit which makes it easy for engineers to model the casting with internal shrinkage cavities. At last,a case study showed that the developed integrated modeling system can be easily used to generate the casting model with shrinkage cavities.
