Numerical Simulation of Remelt Thickness of Work Roll under Centrifugal Casting Process

A program on the two layers solidification process under horizontal centrifugal casting is developed in this paper. A cylindrical coordinate system is used in present geometrical model. The temperature field of the outer layer after part solidification is set as the initial temperature when pouring the intermediate layer into the mold. Groups of simulation are made to decide when to pour the intermediate layer and gAln the required remelt thickness. The influences of the process parameters on remelt thickness are investigated. Results show that the time interval between pouring the intermediate layer and part solidification of outer layer has a great influence on the remelt thickness, but the pouring temperature of intermediate layer has no considerable influence on the remelt thickness of the outer layer. Results also indicate that for the dimension roll simulated in this paper, the better time interval between pouring the intermediate layer and the solidification time of outer layer is nearly five minutes. Longer time will cause the temperature of outer layer drop too much and make it remelt difficultly. Shorter time will cause the temperature of outer layer too high and lead to thicker remelt layer. A comparison of the simulations and the experimental results is given.
