Casting Defects Such as Gas Bubbles and Finnlng in Organically Bonded Molds and Cores

1 Introduction Although green sand is still used in the modem foundry industry, the great majority of cast products are manufactured using molds made of organically bonded silica sand. The processes used to manufacture molds and cores are not limited with respect to either the wall thickness or the productivity. Different processes are used for series casting and heavy castings (furan-phenolic no bake binders being common in the latter case). All synthetic resin systems have one property in common: they bum or pyrolyze at temperatures above 100 ℃. Under certAln conditions, the volumes of gas liberated in this process can lead to gas bubbles in the casting and thus to defective parts. In the present case, however, the investigations specifically concerned only exogenic gas bubbles of larger dimensions. A method of measurement developed by Levelink and Julien was used in this work.
