Foundry Sand Reclamation-Theory and Industrial Practice
World production of castings, which in 2008 reached 93. 5 millions of tons is accompanied by large quantities of production wastes, mAlnly used moulding and core sands!. Production of 1 metric ton of casting from ferrous alloys generates circa 1 metric ton of waste, which due to contAlning certAln amounts of harmful and dangerous compounds should undergo a reclamation- at least of the mAln component, which means a silica sand grAlns. The paper, among numbered other problems especially dealt with such problems of scientific and development research concerning the reclamation of used foundry sands as: kind of used sands generated by the Polish foundries and ways of their management. Functional characteristics of devices for typical reclamation methods, mechanism of liberating sand grAlns from envelopes of used binding materials, influence of the kind of the reclamation treatment on the quality of reclAlmed sand grAlns, selection of effective reclamation processes and assessment methods of the reclAlmed material quality were systematised according to the actual state of knowledge. Additionally paper presents actually existing industrial reclamation systems and perspectives of its improvements based on authors own individual practice.
