High Integrity Oxide Mold Material for Titanium Investment Casting

The purpose of this research is to verify the alpha-case (a-case) formation behavior and then develop the reaction free mold materials which were based on the a-case formation mechanism. The a-case can cause the cost inefficiency because of the post process such as chemical milling and machining. In order to develop the economic netshape forming technique of Ti by casting process, it is necessary to take a much closer look into the a-case formation. In this research, the a-case formations between molten Ti and investment casting molds were investigated through microstructures, hardness profiles, electron probe micro-analyzer and transmission electron microscopy analysis. Considering the microstructure, hardness profile, EPMA mapping, TEM analysis and thermodynamic consideration, it could be confirmed that the a-case is formed not only by interstitial oxygen element but also by substitutional metallic elements dissolved from mold materials. On the basis of the a-case formation mechanism, a-case controlled mold material could be possible to reduce the a-case reaction layer.
