Study on the Ester-Cured Alkaline Phenolic Binder Systems for Large Steel Castings
The ester-cured alkaline phenolic binder systems is a more environmentally acceptable foundry binder, which has been successfully applied for making high grades of steel castings in our country. But when applied to a large steel casting, two key technologies are often encountered: 1, more of free formaldehyde emission usually occur during the stripping pattern from the mould. thus leading to environmental pollution; 2, the bench life of mould or core sand is too short to meet the requirements associated with the conditions of operation of moulding and coremaking. A large number of trials have found that the free formaldehyde emissions during the stripping can be reduced to below O. 25rnq/rn by optimizing the synthesis process and adding environmental aldehyde reduction agent, thus better solving the environmental problems of ester-set alkaline phenolic resin binder sand. In addition, a special slow-curing agent for alkaline phenolic resin has been developed, the bench life of which can be extended up to 120min, and then meeting the production needs of moulding and coremaking of large steel casting. At present, the newly developed alkaline phenolic binder systems have been successfully employed to the production of steel castings.
