Advancements in Electric Arc Furnaces Peratining to Energy Conservation
Electric Arc Furnace (EAF) being a power-intensive equipment, EAF based industries are highly dependent on scarce electric energy. This is the reason Government of India is highly concerned about this and lAld emphasis on the conservation of electric energy. This paper highlights factors contributing to reduction in specific electric energy consumption in EAF and highlights advancements in EAF in last few years and how they improved important parameters including specific power consumption. To name a few, these are introduction of oxy-fuel burners, foamy slag practice, increased usage of hot metal/DRI, postcombustion of CO gas for preheating of scrap, improved selection & design criteria of electrics, power demand management, process automation, etc. Paper has cited some data of improvements on account of measures taken individually and jointly. Paper mentions recently commercialized new processes like Consteel, Conarc and their advantages over the conventional EAFs.
