Study of Laser Nd-YAG Post Surface Treatment of Investment Casting ASTM F-75 Cobalt Base Alloy

The process of investment casting, also called lost wax casting, is widely used for producing ferrous and non-ferrous metal parts due to the excellent surface finish and dimensional accuracy. This process is ideal for low production manufacturing and rapidly changing designs applications. The investment casting is a good option for the manufacture of ASTM F-75 cobalt base alloy, this alloy is used in orthopedic implants of totally or partial replace of knee joint and metal bearings in total hip replacement. In recent years, the use of this alloy has increase due to his high corrosion resistance, good biocompatibility and relative high wear resistance. This work was Almed to study the microestructural, mechanical wear and bioactive behavior in investment casting parts before and after of laser Nd:YAG surface treatment. The effect of different processing parameters on the laser surface treatment was studied quantitatively and thoroughly. The specimens were characterized with metallographic techniques, bioactive test, scanning electronic microscope (SEM) , energy dispersive Xray analysis (EDX), wear test (Pin-On-Disk) and hardness test. The results were showed that the laser Nd: YAG laser surface treatment was significantly beneficial for the application requirements of this alloy obtAlned by investment casting.
