Microstructure Characteristics of Rapidly-Solidified/Melt-Spun AZ91 Alloy
The microstructure of AZ91 alloy processed by melt-spinning has been deeply and comprehensively investigated comparing to that conventionally cast in a steel mold. Laser optical microscopy (LOM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) as well as transmission electron microscopy (TEM) were used to characterize the microstructures. In the melt-spun alloy, the results indicate that dendrites are distributed in the region near the surface of copper roller, and cellular grAlns concentrated on the rest regions were found with different size. In order to explAln the formation of the two morphologies, the cooling rate of the rapid solidification process at the position near free surface of AZ91 melt-spun ribbon is theoretically calculated and experimentally compared to cast AZ91. The existence and distribution of lamellar eutectic and divorced eutectic in the cast AZ91 but divorced eutectic in the melt-spun AZ91 were also studied.
