Fine Bainitic Phase in Ductile Iron Produced by Controlled Cooling Heat Treatment

A study was made to develop fine bAlnite phase by controlled cooling heat treatment. Hot shake - out of 1 inch Y-block sand mold was performed prior the isothermal treatment to increase the cooling rate. Very fine bAlnite structure was successfully developed in isothermal temperature 150 ℃ and 200 ℃ with average thickness 56.05 nm and 72.68 nm respectively within only isothermal time 12 hours. Fine bAlnitic phase showed very high hardness to 640 HV on isothermal treatment 150 ℃ and 622 HV on isothermal treatment 200 ℃. This very fine bAlnite phase never been reported in bAlnitic ductile cast iron that produced by austempering process. The achievement of fine bAlnite phase by controlled cooling heat treatment in low temperature was because there is no austenitizing process which will keep low carbon content in austenite phase compared to austenitizing process which will increase carbon content in austenite due to small amount carbon from graphite was dissolved.
