Interfacial Reactions between K441 Superalloy and Different Ceramic Core during Casting

The hollow structure of K441 superalloy castings is formed by pure alumina core, alumina based core, pure fused silica core and silica based core, respectively. With the Ald of Optical Microscope (OM), Scanning Electric Microscope (SEM), Energy Dispersive Spectroscope (EDS) and KLA-Tencor Alpha-step IQ surface profiler, the microstructure, resultant of interfacial reaction and surface quality on the inner surface of K441 superalloy castings were investigated. The results show that the microstructure of the casting which uses silica based core is the coarsest and the surface roughness is 2. 555IJm due to the liquid alloy penetration and interfacial reaction. The microstructure of the casting which uses fused silica core is the finest and the surface roughness is only O. 25051Jm. The casting which uses pure alumina core and fused silica core has high inner surface finish quality.
