Research on a New Method for Dimension Measurement of Castings Based on 3D Reconstruction Technology with Marking Points

Depending on the features of castings, stereo images of them are captured with high resolution digital camera, after the markers have been set on the surface according to the characteristics of their shapes and the castings have been put on the experiment platform. Based on the combination of corner detection and 3D reconstruction technology, this paper proposes a new method for dimension measurement of castings. Compared with the general methods, it has some remarkable advantages, such as non-contact, high effectiveness and low-cost and is suitable for dimension measurement of complex casting surfaces and medium or large castings. The mathematical model of this casting dimension measurement method, as well as some of its key technologies is represented in this paper. The experiment results show that the new method can efficiently and accurately measure the dimension of castings and intercompare the shapes of castings and models. Thus, this paper will provide necessary theoretical and practical basis for the application of the actual production.
