Study on Modified Furan Resin Foundry Binder Systems for Large Steel Castings

Based on the conventional resin synthesis process, Modified by adding organic matter of polyphenols, a new furan resin foundry binder systems used for the production of moulds or cores of large steel castings were developed. The new resin binder systems are characterized by having low-emission toxic gas (free formaldehyde is less than O. 1%) , high tensile strength of mould or core sand(more than 1. 6 MPa) and good collapsibility after pouring. At the same time, the composition of the conventional sulphonic acid hardener for no-bake furan resin has also been adjusted to decrease the S content of the hardener and extend the bench life of mould or core sand, the S content of the adjusted suiphonic acid hardener is lower than conventional one by about 20%-50% and the bench life of mould or core sand may be extended to more than 60min. The article also describes the successful application of the new furan resin foundry binder systems in large steel castings.
