Development of Respiratory Protective Devices for Iron Foundry Man: Experimental Study on Application of New Respirator

As the last respiratory protective measurement for the foundry man in their occupations, many respiratory protective devices cannot provide adequate protection. The reasons for this occupational health risk may be due to the outdated protective technologies, improper respiratory protective devices and management strategies and so on. This pilot study is conducted on the investigation of the current applying status of the respiratory protective devices and how to improve the respiratory protective technologies, especially the self-inhaled type respirators for foundry man. Two experiments have been completed to investigate the dust concentration in the current typical foundry workplace and to test the filtration performance of traditional self-inhaled respirators, respectively. A new type respirator with high filtration ability and expectative low resistance has been designed based on the experimental results and the new respirator fit test panel with the proper facial anthropometric dimensions for Chinese. The results show that many foundry workplaces have high dust concentration which may threaten the health of workers. With the high filtering efficiency and also high resistance, foundry man trend to remove the respirator during the processing of physical labor. Hence, foundry dusts may penetrate the respirators and deposit in the lung. The filtration performance of the new respirator demonstrates that the filter materials and the respirator fit test panel based on Chinese facial dimensions may definitively affects goodness of respirators fit. New selfinhaled type respirator with electret polypropylene fiber may be the substitute for the traditional respirator in foundry workplace.
