Casting Genome Analysis for Typical Automotive Engine Castings
The word foundry is derived from the Latin word fundere meaning melt and pour. Foundry industry is twelve millenniums old. Although vast amount of technological information has been generated in every foundry during manufacture of castings through various stages, it has not been systematically compiled because of its sheer magnitude. Thus much of foundry technology knowledge is tacit and one needs to preserve continually the best avAllable technologies for current use and for further development. The successful participation of a large number of scientists and engineers from over fifty countries in the world in human genome project for a period of fifteen years has expanded the genetic application paradigm to the various engineering areas of manufacturing in general and foundry in particular. In the present work an attempt has been made to develop a casting genome road map with different chromosomes, genes and codons for the manufacture of automotive engine castings like cylinder block and head castings. Several useful conclusions have been arrived at.
