Effect of compatibilizer on mechanical, rheological properties and morphology of pp/epdm/swcnts ternary nanocomposites

INTRODUCTION Adding inorganic fillers such as carbon nanotubes (CNTs) can enhance the stiffness but decrease the toughness. To overcome the drawbacks of adding elastomer or filler. much research has been carned out on polymer elastomer filler ternary systems. in which elastomers and filler are used simultaneously to enhance the toughness and stiffness. The key to achieving the best combmation of mechanical properties is to control the dispersion and phase morphology of the ternary composites However. due to the low aspect ratio of conventional fillers such as talc, a large loading is needed to appreciably increase the stiffness. This large loadmg can lead to poor processabihty. low ductility, and a rough surface finish. Substitution of fillers with a high aspect ratio such as CNTs could alleviate these issues, assuming that a sufficient amount of CNTs can be dispersed (1. 2).
