Fibre composite delamination with nanoparticle modified epoxy matrix

The delamination behaviour of carbon fibre composite laminates with nano-particle modified epoxy matrices was reported in this paper. Nano-rubber, nano-silica and nano-rubber/nano-silica particles were used and their positive effects on the inter-laminar toughness of the composites were obtained. Different features of crack-wake fibre bridging were observed, which suggested that the nano-particles might improve the toughness by changing the fibre/matrix interface properties. Fibre bundle pullout tests were therefore conducted to confirm this proposal. The results from this work show that the presence of nano-particles, either hard particles or soft particles, can improve the interlaminar fracture resistance of the composite laminates. However, compared to the toughness values of the same nano-particle modified bulk epoxies without carbon fibres 1, the delamination toughening effect is limited, especially when the particle loading is high.
