INVESTIGATING THE STRESS DISTRIBUTION OF SINGLE WALLED CARBON NANOTUBES EMBEDDED IN POLYIMIDE NANOCOMPOSITES

INTRODUCTION Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) with the superior mechanical properties have been extensively employed as reinforcement in nanocomposites. However, the influence of the carbon nanotubes on the mechanical performance of the nanocomposites is relied on the load transfer efficiency from the surrounding matrix to the CNTs. As a result, understanding the stress distribution of the CNT embedded within the nanocomposites is becoming an essential issue especially for the nano-scale reinforcement. In this study, the stress distribution of the CNTs within the nanocomposites subjected to axial loading was examined through molecular dynamics (MD) simulation. In addition, the effects of the atomistic interactions between the CNTs and the surrounding polyimide on the load transfer efficiency of CNTs were also investigated.
