On the prediction of nanocomposite mechanical properties

INTRODUCTION Thanks to the outstanding functional and mechanical properties they are endowed with, nanocomposites are gaining more and more interest from the scientific community and the industry. Focusing on structural nanocomposites, in the literature, there is a large amount of data reporting improvements of stiffness, strength and toughness 1-6. The amelioration of the polymer toughness, in particular, is of utmost importance since not only broadens the nanocomposites field of standalone applications but also makes the use of ternary composites a smart solution. However, a successful engineering application of either nanocomposites or nanoadditivated composites, is impossible without models, analytical or numerical, capable of capturing the nature of the phenomena leading to the improvement of the macroscopic mechanical behaviour.
