Investigating failure behaviors of adhesive joint based on molecular dynamics simulation
INTRODUCTION Polymer based adhesive joint have been extensively employed in aerospace, automotive, sporting goods, household, and packaging industries for many decades. It is observed that the joint failure associated with interfacial debonding and cohesive failure often occurs during the application. Thus, understanding the underneath mechanism causing the failure of the adhesive joint is needed to achieve the superior performance of the joint. In this study, the polyimide adhesive was sandwiched between two metal face sheets and the mechanical response of the adhesive joint was evaluated by means of tensile loading. The fracture process as well as the failure mechanisms of adhesive joint was examined based on the molecular dynamics (MD) simulations.
