Surface modification of eggshell bio-filler in order to improve the mechanical properties of natural rubber anocomposites

INTRODUCTION Natural rubber (NR) is extensively used in compounding processes; however, using this material without reinforcing agents, e.g. Carbon black and silica fillers, is not recommended by researchers. Among different types of inorganic fillers, calcium carbonate (CA) is widely used in almost elastomer compounds due to its wet ability at high loading levels. Furthermore, in order to reduce the high surface energy due to filler-filler interactions, which would lead to agglomerates, it is customary to coat the filler surface chemically using stearic acid 1-3. Recently, nano-sized CA has been considerably used as new reinforcing agent, for the resulting materials have shown superior thermal and mechanical properties 4-6. Many researchers have been studying the impacts of nano-sized CA in elastomeric compounds 3, 5, 6. Mnif et al. 5 found that by adding the mentioned fillers, the toughness of PP/EPR blends would increase, so that the size of elastomeric particles could decrease in the presence of nano-sized CA; furthermore, the mechanical properties could improve as a result of adhesion at interface being improved. Besides the particle size effect, surface topology of filler is of great importance. Modification of nano-sized CA to improve its surface activity toward NBR and EPR is studied by Lipinska et al. 3.
