CATALYTIC PREPARATION OF POLYPROPYLENE/CLAY NANOCOMPOSTTES WITH CONTROLLED PARTICLE MORPHOLOGY

INTRODUCTION Since the invention of nylon/clay nanocomposites by Toyota researchers in the 1990s 1. Significant research and development activities have been devoted to preparation of other polymer nanocomposites. In believing the effectiveness and efficiency to reach high performance polymeric materials using the relatively simple yet highly fruitful approach 2. Among them, polypropylene (PP) nanocomposites are of particular interest in that, on one hand. PP is one of the most important families of commercially successful polymeric materials having profoundly wide applications, for which a development of high performance PP nanocomposites is highly desirable: on the other hand, it is both scientifically challenging and technologically difficult to fabricate PP-based nanocomposites because of the non-polar nature of PP thennodynamically preventing its molecules from intercalating into the inter-platelet gallery of clay 3.
