Size and surface effects on the mechanical behavior of nano-cylinder in gradient elasticity
INTRODUCTION Nanostructures with various shapes and geometries have increased considerable attention in recent years due to their extraordinary physico-mechanical properties and great potential applications in nano- and micro-electromechanical systems. For example, hollow nanowires can be used as key building blocks in nano-devices and reinforce structures in nano-composites. Due to the small characteristic sizes of nanostructures, the mechanical analysis based on the classical elasticity theory may not be applicable to these structures and the microstructural effect of the material becomes nonnegligible 1.
