Controlled manufacturing of a Joule heating stimulated shape-memory material based on CB filled EOC and EOC/EPDM blends

Shape-memory (SM) composites based on ethylene-octene copolymer (EOC) and EOC/Ethylenepropylene rubber (EPDM) blends, respectively, filled with carbon black (CB) were prepared, which were able to become stimulated by Joule heating. In the present work, in order to control the preparation process, we measured the electrical conductance (OMEC) of the composites along the whole manufacturing process. Using different characterization techniques the physical background of the change of the electrical conductivity of the composites during compounding and cross-linking process was discussed. It has been found that the conductivity of the composites depends strongly on the development of blend morphology, i.e. domain size of the dispersed EPDM phase, CB dispersion and phase specific distribution in blends during compounding process, and cross-linking density as well as the re-agglomeration extent during heat treatment. The Joule heating SM behavior of the composites with different structure induced by diffe rent preparation conditions was characterized and discussed.
