Preparation and characterization of reactive modifier capable of hydrogen-bonding: intermolecular interaction involving epoxy resin

INTRODUCTION Epoxy resins are widely used as advanced materials for surface coatings, adhesive, laminates, composites, painting materials, and insulating material for electric devices 1. Several studies were set forth to improve both thermal and mechanical properties by developing either additive- or reactive-type modifiers into epoxy resins such as incorporating hydrogen bonding, creating an chemical cross-linking mechanism, or blending with inorganic materials 2-4. By incorporating chemical or physical modifications into epoxy resins, excellent thermal and mechanical properties can be obtained. In this work, a reactive modifier, DOPO-tri-azetidine-2,4-diones, was synthesized and passable cured with aromatic triamine tris(4-aminophenyl)amine (TPA) in epoxy thermosets. The flexibility of the epoxy polymers could be tailored through incorporating hydrogen-bonding rich malonamide functional groups between intermolecular structures.
