The effect of heat-set process on poly(ether ether ketone)(PEEK)/Multi-walled Carbon Nanotubes hybrid fibers

INTRODUCTION PEEK is a semi-crystalline thermoplastic polymer, with outstanding solvent resistance, thermal and chemical stability 1, attribute to rigid benzene ring, flexible ether bond and carbonyl of improving the intermolecular force. For reason given above, PEEK has been applied in the automobile, aerospace, chemical industry. A lot of efforts have been devoted to improving the properties of PEEK via incorporation with fillers such as carbon fibers, glass fibers 2, 3, and nanoparticles. The Youngs Modulus of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) can reach 1 Tpa 4, which is more superior to carbon fiber. The most attractive performance of CNTs is the tensile strength, which can reach 63 Gpa, however 5. This is stronger than the high strength carbon fiber; even the tensile strength of the most poor carbon nanotubes reaches several Gpa. These highly performances make it an excellent filler to improve the mechanical properties 6.
