Opal matrix-metal nanocomposites prepared by reduction of salts and oxides using supercritical spirits

INTRODUCTION One of the tasks of the modern materials science is development of methods for fabrication of nanostructured materials with precisely defined nanoparticles sizes. Ability to control sizes of structures and phase distribution in nanocomposites provides means for preparing materials with new functional properties which significantly differ from properties of bulk objects. Different ways of filling interspherical cavities in opal matrices with semiconductor, magnetic, luminescent etc. Materials are known: processing under pressure at high temperatures (filling with melt metals), ultrasonic deposition, chemical sedimentation, chemical transport reactions, hydrothermal processing, sol-gel process. Opal matrix (OM) comprised of cubic-packed monodisperse SiO2 spheres can carry out the function of a set of nano-reactors which define dimensional characteristics of chemical processes, as well as physical and chemical properties of substances formed in the cavities. In this work, results of preparation of several OM + M (M stands for various metals) nanocomposites by reducing salts and oxides of various metals with supercritical (SC) spirits (ethanol, isopropanol) are stated.
