Mechanical properties and biocompatibility of β-Ti-14Mo-3Nb-3Al-0.2Si alloy

INTRODUCTION Pure titanium and Ti -6A1-4V alloys are being used as bone implants under biomechanical loading conditions because of its excellent biocompatibility and mechanical properties in orthopedic and dental fields. Recently, (3 type Ti -15Mo and Ti -35Nb-7Zr-5Ta have been developed in order to achieve low modulus, which is beneficial for bone remodeling. The recent trend in research and development of titanium alloys for biomedical applications is to develop low modulus β type titanium alloys with excellent mechanical properties and workability 5. It is well established that mineral of human and animal bone is calcium-phosphate compound with an amorphous or an apatite structure. An essential requirement for an artificial material to bond to living bone is the formation of a bonelike apatite layer on its surface in body environment.
