Study on the vulcanization characteristics of Polybutadiene Rubber/Clay nanocomposites synthesized by two different methods

INTRODUCTION Various fillers have been used to reinforce rubbers. Smectite clays with a layered structure exist in nature in abundance and have been employed as inorganic filler in rubber copounds. The smectite clays are hydrophilic and can be modified with various organic chemicals and used as a reinforcing material. Various methods have been used to-to-mix organoclay with rubbers 1-2. In this work Polybutadiene rubber which accounts for about 25% of the worlds production of synthetic rubber 3 have been used to prepare nanocomposite using solution and melting procees. Smectit clay and organoclay used as the reinforcing materials and their effects on vulcanization and properties of the compounds compared. Meanwhile characteristics of the compounds prepared by solution method were compared with those of prepared through meltng process.
