Interfacial reaction and its effect on the mechanical reliability of STS304/A11050/STS439 clad metal heat-treated at high temperatures

INTRODUCTION Recently, the use of clad material as a structural material is increasing in many industries because it has material properties that cannot be obtained from a single material. Clad metals, consisting of two or more different metals and alloys, have been developed because of their unique properties 1. For example, stainless steel clad aluminum bilayer sheets(STS304/Al) or (STS439/A1) have a good combination of properties because they can exploit both the excellent heat-resistance, corrosion-resistance and mechanical properties of stainless steel and the high thermal and electrical conductivities of aluminum 2,3. Cook-wares made of STS/Al/STS clad can reduce and save energy due to their excellent heat-conducting properties. Methods for fabricating clad materials include overlay welding, explosion welding, extrusion, and rolling 4,5. Clad rolling a material plate sandwiched by other material plates is the most common process of fabricating a 3-ply clad material because it is efficient and economical compared to other types of processes. Clad metals processed by rolling often needs to be annealed to enhance the formability because they are usually strengthened during rolling 6.
