Improvement of thermal and gas barrier properties of cyclo olefin copolymer (COC) by silica nanoparticles

INTRODUCTION Cyclo olefin copolymers (COC) are amorphous or semicrystalline thermoplastics, which are manufactured by copolymerization of cyclo olefin and olefin monomers 1-2. This polymer has a potential application in optical fiber and transparent engineering thermoplastic as well as the polycarbonate does. The aim of the addition of the nanopowder inorganic particles is to increase modulus, strength and other properties of polymer. The silica containing nanocomposites show remarkable barrier properties to gases and moisture as well as very good resistance to staining 3-5.
