Effects of ferroceny group on refractive index of colloidal crystal system formed by polymer-grated silica

INTRODUCTION It is well known that colloidal crystallization of monodisperse colloidal particles takes place in deionized aqueous solution due to an electrostatic repulsion between particles 1. Recently, application of immobilized colloidal crystals to photonic devices has been receiving great attention 2. However, there are serious problems in this approaching, because of low refraction index and dielectric constant of silica. In this work, in order to overcome these short-comings of silica, incorporation of iron(0) complex into polymer-grafted silica and colloidal crystallization in organic solvents were investigated. We chose zero-valent iron complex, ferrocenyl methacrylate (FcMA), to introduce into grafted polymer 3,4. The reason for employing the iron(O) complexes was ascribed to prevent from increasing ionic strength in the suspension, which usually disturbed colloidal crystallization.
