Genome-wide identification of novel homologous microRNAs in the marmoset genome by comparative genomics method
Background MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are a vital class of regulated RNAs. They regulate gene expressions by base pairing to target mRNAs for translation repression or mRNA degradation. Although deep sequencing is a very effective method to discover small non-coding RNA on a large scale, but it is still an expensive and labour intensive to most laboratories and it can only identify miRNAs expressed in a given condition. While the sequencing technology now allow faster sequencing at a lower cost than ever before, more and more genome data of organisms will be produced. Thus using these genomic data, we can predict novel homologs of miRNAs depend on conservation of hairpins in closely related species by comparative genomic methods.
