A PRELIMINARY STUDY OF THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THE CUTANEOUS ELECTROGASTROGRAM AND STIMULATION OF ST-36 HOU-SAN-LI
Hou-san-li (ST-36) is one of the major acupoints used to treat gastrointestinal disorders, but so far there has been a lack of objective indexes for measurement of the effects of acupuncture on stomach function. We studied changes in the cutaneous electrogastrogram (EGG) of 32 rabbits, before and during electroacupuncture stimulation at Hou-san-li. We then studied the influence of different receptor agonists and antagonists on the effects of electroacupuncture. The results show that electroacupuncture regulates the rabbits EGG amplitude with a bidirectional effect. The regulatory pathway may involve M-cholinoceptors and a-adrenoceptors. According to statistical analysis (P<0.01), the effects mediated through the two different receptor types are significantly different.
